week 20

I have been selected to play the role of Bennett in Punk rock. Not going to lie I am not to happy about this role because Bennett is such a horrible character and i just don’t like him, but at the end of the day its my job as an actor to play parts that i might not like, so I’m going to suck it up and play Bennett to the best of my ability. I have fully read the play 2 times, the first time was to just get a feel for it and to have general knowledge of the play, characters, relationships, and status. The second time i read it was with the intention of focusing on Bennett the the actions he takes, how he takes them, how he behaves around and with certain characters, to get some basic understanding of what kind of person he is and how i should play him. From what I could tell Bennett is cocky, mean, aggressive, and the top dog in the school.

I say he is cocky because in the start of scene 4 he kills a wasp to show off to everyone, and whilst he does that he acts as if its the biggest act anyone could ever do calling it “magic”.

I say that he is mean because of the way he treats Chadwick all throughout the play. All throughout the play Bennett is constantly bullying and picking on Chadwick who did nothing to deserve that whatsoever.

Bennett is aggressive towards Chadwick using force (Depending how you view it) in scene 3 and 4 when he demands that Chadwick gets his wallet out, and demands Tanya to put lipstick on Chadwick.

And finally i say that Bennett is the top dog because no one opposes him, no one stands up to Bennett, allowing him to do whatever he wants with Chadwick and saying what ever he wants to whoever he wants whenever he wants.

We also did a group read through of the play, and since the characters of Bennett, Nicholas, and William are double cast [meaning there are 2 actors playing the same role] we took turns saying our lines instead of doing two read through with each cast to save up on time for example; i would say one of my lines, and then the other actor playing Bennett would say the next line and we just repeat that process.
