Practitioners

Constantin Stanislavsky- Stanislavsky was a Russian practitioner, he created the system for the method. He created techniques such as, magic if, and given circumstance’s (see Page 7 & 9 in unit 1 techniques)

Bertolt Brecht- Brecht was a German practitioner that got exiled from Germany because of his controversial plays against the Nazi’s. he was a very political practitioner and most of his plays were political. Brecht believed that the audience needs to be aware they are in a theatre, so he created a technique that’s built on multiple techniques, and its called epic theatre (refer back to unit 1, page 21, techniques)

Uta Hagen- Uta Hagen created a series of nine questions to help the actor perform their character even better. these questions are; who am I? What time is it? Where am I? What surrounds me? What are the given circumstances? What are my relationships? What do I want? What is in my way? What do I do to get what I want? by asking and answering all of these nine questions you as an actor can further develop and add life to your character.

Sanford Meisner- Sanford was an American practitioner who strongly believed that the use of past events to conjure up emotions was wrong. Miesner believed it was “unnecessary at best and harmful at worst”, so instead Miesner’s belief’s were that imagination is the way to go and the best way to do things. His most well know technique is the repetition exercise (refer back to unit 1 page 6 techniques) and the reason it’s the most well known is because he believed that if you do something enough it will be drilled into your soul and there will be knew metaphorical muscles you didn’t know you had. This helps a ton with learning scenes, and the right emotions to well up whilst on stage without using emotional memory.

Mike Leigh- Mike Leigh started out as an actor, he was a theatre director and was a playwright for a time before he moved to filmmaking. He came up with the techniques; shortlisting, one to one, and build the character (refer to unit 1, techniques, page 22, 23, 24)
